Richard Wheeldon opened his Chemist shop on Burton Road, West Didsbury in 1896 (shop pictured below). Thirty years later, his son Harold started Wheeldon Opticians on the site known as The Terminus on Palatine Road in West Didsbury after the First World War. His son John joined him in 1947 and the expansion led to ten Wheeldon practices around the South Manchester area.

In more recent times, John’s two sons, David and James, run the business from three practice addresses - one still in West Didsbury, on Palatine Road and two others in Cheadle and Wilmslow - and endeavour to continue the company’s ethos of delivering a quality service. Wheeldon Opticians have been on the same site in West Didsbury for over eighty years, becoming a fixture of the local landscape. The new building, finished in 1996, offers a light and airy display area along with on-site glazing, disabled access and a large car park.

H.J.Wheeldon Services

Eye Examinations - an eye examination is carried out by an optometrist and usually takes about 30 minutes (but may take longer if further tests are required). Retinal photography is strongly recommended and greatly assists with the examination.

Wheeldon Opticians are also able to offer diabetic screening, cataract referrals, glaucoma refinement and consultant referrals. They are also accredited to carry out DVLA Field Screening.

A full range of frames are carried in the shop and range from every-day styles to designer styles. There is also always a good range of sunglasses - many of which can be fitted with prescription lenses.
