Didsbury Good Neighbours is a local neighbourhood care group, based in South Manchester. A registered charity, run by local people, they are funded by Manchester City Council and their own fundraising efforts. They promote valuing older people and offer opportunities for isolated people to meet others, rekindle interests, try new activities and be a part of society.

They are a volunteer-led charity, providing a variety of volunteering opportunities for people in Didsbury which they firmly believe benefit the volunteers as much as the older people they work to support.

With financial assistance from the Edward Holt Trust they have recently refurbished the Holt Pavilion in Didsbury Park as a splendid base for activities and events focused on the interests of older people in the area.

BEFRIENDING

The core of their work is befriending isolated older people. They do this by recruiting and training volunteer befrienders; they are then matched with an older person who they visit regularly at home. Didsbury Good Neighbours are also developing a new telephone befriending service – a weekly friendship call (lasting normally around 20 minutes) from a trained and supported volunteer.

Other befriending services include emergency food shopping, transport to hospital appointments, wheelchair pushing and accompanied day trips. No fee is charged for befriending services.
